It’s kind of interesting, but the characters often revel in being crude, disgusting, and vile. Some say it’s a mark of gritty realism, but I would much rather read Lord of the Rings or the Chronicles of Narnia–stories that are filled with excitement, imagination, creativity, and wonderful characters without catering to the lowest common denominator. I’m about halfway through GoT and don’t have much desire to finish because, like you said, I would much rather fill my mind with things that are good, right, and pleasing (Philippians 4:8).
