When I lived abroad, I met lots of new people and I experimented with telling them about different jobs I did — they treated me very differently depending on which job I mentioned…. hmmm… I think that sounds like a good blog post for tomorrow :)

Labels are used to identify people. “Banker,” “Farmer,” “Actor,” “Biker,” “Liberal,” “Republican,” and so on. Why not focus on the person instead of the label? “Someone who works at a bank,” “A guy who farms,” etc. We use labels to pigeonhole people into easily-identifiable categories because it’s easier than actually getting to know them. I think it would be cool if we never told anyone what we did for a living, because for a lot of people who they are is very different from what they do.
